2026 Elections for the 2026-2027 AULSA Committee

Nominations are open for the following positions on the Committee of the AULSA for the 2026-2027 term:

You can nominate for up to TWO positions, including no more than ONE Executive position and ONE Representative position in the SAME PORTFOLIO.

Basic eligibility - who can apply?

To be eligible to nominate for a position on the AULSA Committee you must be a member of the AULSA. This means you must be a student currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws at Adelaide University. Cross-institutional, non-award and exchange students are not eligible to nominate for a position.

Positions with special eligibility criteria

Certain positions on the AULSA Committee have special eligibility criteria. If you nominate for the position of:

• President, you must satisfy clause 76 of the AULSA Constitution

• International and Exchange Student Representative, you must satisfy clause 77 of the AULSA Constitution

• Queer Representative, you must satisfy clause 78 of the AULSA Constitution

• First Nations Representative, you must satisfy clause 80 of the AULSA Constitution

• Mature Age Representative, you must satisfy clause 81 of the AULSA Constitution

If you do not satisfy the eligibility requirements of the position for which you are nominating, your nomination will not be accepted.

How to nominate for a position

Complete the Nomination Form available at the bottom of this page.

• The nomination form must include a candidate statement of no more than 400 words if nominating for an Executive position and no more than 200 words if nominating for a Representative position.

• The nomination form must be signed by the candidate and two law students enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws at Adelaide University, and who are law students other than the candidate.

Email your completed and signed nomination form by attachment to the Returning Officer, Lisa Cooper, via l.cooper@adelaide.edu.au no later than 5pm Adelaide time on Friday 9 October 2026.

• The email must include a passport sized photo in jpeg format.

• Applications received after this time will not be accepted.

Note: The candidate statement and photo will be used to create a Candidate Guide for distribution prior to the commencement of voting. If you do not comply with these requirements, your nomination will be invalid.

Tickets are prohibited

If you nominate for a position with the intention of forming a ticket, your nomination may be voided if you run in a ticket. As such, please be aware that if you nominate for a position, you will be required to run independently.

Nominations for the position of Magazine Editor(s)

Pursuant to the AULSA Constitution and Election Rules, the position of Magazine Editor(s) is a joint position. This means a team of three members may run for the position of Magazine Editor. You will not face a penalty if you campaign as a group or in a ticket if and only if the candidates are running solely for the position of Magazine Editors.

Campaigning

Campaigning is NOT a requirement to run for election. Should you wish to campaign, campaigning is allowed from Thursday 15 October 2026 at 9am. Please refer to the AULSA Election Rules for further information about campaigning.

Candidate briefing meeting

A candidate briefing meeting will be organised for [time TBC] on Wednesday 14 October 2026 for candidates who have nominated for a position that is contested. This meeting is to discuss campaigning rules and the voting process.

Returning Officer

As the Returning Officer for the 2026 AULSA Elections, I, Lisa Cooper, will:

• advise on ensuring the elections are run in accordance with any relevant laws of the State of South Australia and the Commonwealth;

• advise on issues of the AULSA Constitution and Election Rules that may affect the elections (including disputed returns (see below)); and

• count/tally votes and scrutineer the vote counting process.

Disputed Returns

According to the AULSA Constitution, ‘the Executive shall have the responsibility of interpreting this Constitution’. The eligibility criteria for various Committee positions are governed by the AULSA Constitution, therefore determining whether a candidate is eligible to nominate, or if elected return to their position, remains the sole responsibility of the AULSA Executive. Given the potential for this to create conflict, the President and Executive has resolved to defer the matter to the Dean of Law (Professor Judith McNamara) and I in the capacity of Returning Officer for determination, and that the Executive will respect that decision and enforce it.

Voting

Voting is scheduled between Monday 19 October and Friday 23 October 2026.

The physical voting/polling place will be the AULSA office at Adelaide University. Further details about voting dates and times will be circulated closer to these dates.
